The David Gemmell Legend Awards

As an avid reader I tend to spend a lot of my time with my head stuck in a book, some have even joked at my collection calling it the Fantasy Aladdin’s Cave, and even gone so far as suggesting that I use it to create trenches to fight off the high brow literati for the honour of the genre. (Incidentally, if there is a Swedish Furniture chain that would like to come round, measure up, sort the shelving and install the lot for free, let me know. LOL)

Anyway, back onto point, lets just say that I read a hell of a lot and I thought that I would put my tuppence worth into the pot to kick this off. So books that I have spotted, and think may be nominated are (titles nominated by others are in brackets):

George RR Martin- a Dance with Dragons( assuming it come s out this year). After all, it was my impatience with waiting on him that redirected me to David. What an encounter that was! Martin still lacks something that Gemmell had in spades- the FIRE in the belly.

Kari Sperring - Living With Ghosts. Gorgeously written, beautiful story.

I know that some people weren't that enamoured of it Jen, however I really enjoyed it especially with the hints of Dumas writing style within. A good bit of fun I thought.

Interesting list Gareth - isn't Trudi Canavan 'Magician's Apprentice' an old one - or did she have one by a similar title?

Hey Debs,
Nope it was a new one that was out in February 09 for the first time. I think part of what leads to a lot of peoples confusion is that its set in "The Black Magician" world (The Magician's Guild, Novice, High Lord) which have been about for a few years.

Interestingly enough some of the titles that I think have a shot haven't been released yet and Im only going off what I've seen blurb wise as well as experience with thier previous work. So its going to be interesting to see how many do get nommed. Likewise I'll probably continue to add as I come across other titles that i think have a good chance of getting there that I didn't note before. LOL

The real dark area for me is going to be the US titles as unless its an international author I won't have heard of, for example some of last years nominees (we're going to have to get a new title for them, perhaps The Legion which becomes either The Heroes (for the shortlist) or The Dragon?) such as Jaida and Danielle's Havemercy were a complete surprise. Always good fun but I have to find them pretty quickly otherwise I get a tad annoyed that I don't know either who they are or whats cracking about the books. Hopefully we'll also get some Nominees from the Canadian Book Board this year (which if memory serves is Government funded to a certain degree) or even some Antipodean talent that's yet to make it to the UK.

Whilst this may seem a case of why nominate, they're unknown, people have to remember that all the known names now were once first time authors and trying to break the big time, thats why this award is special, everyone has a shot at winning and its a great way to champion the genre even if we're all "...zit-ridden little brothers of science fiction geeks."

Well, I personally would have to add the good Stephen Deas to the suggestions for the longlist.. not that I'm biased or anything :)

...to be precise Stephen Deas and Part One of the Memory of Flames trilogy, entitled "The Adamantine Palace"

Just a quick correction - the Raymond E Feist title is RIDES A DREAD LEGION.

Thanks for the catch Sarah, I've corrected it now.

Michaela, LOL, yeah I remember enjoying Stephens book but forgot that it was out this year, will add it to the list. Nope, no biasedness in there in the slightest.

I've really enjoyed Jacqueline Carey's Kushiel series, and I'm saving the latest one, Kushiel's Justice to read on holiday. Has anyone else enjoyed her books?

Also recently read A madness of angels by Kate Griffin, which I enjoyed, but perhaps because it's London based and I'm a Londoner. Never knew that the terms and conditions of carriage on London Underground could be so powerful...

ABRAHAM, Daniel - The Price of Spring
BAKKER, R. Scott - The Judging Eye
CAMPBELL, Alan - God of Clocks
ELLIOTT, Kate - Traitor's Gate (forthcoming: August)
FARRELL, S.L. - A Magic of Nightfall
FOX, Daniel - Dragon in Chains
FRIEDMAN, C. S. - Wings of Wrath
GILMAN, Felix - Gears of the City
HUNT, Stephen - The Rise of the Iron Moon
JORDAN, Robert and Brandon Sanderson - The Gathering Storm (forthcoming: November)
LAKE, Jay - Green
MONETTE, Sarah - Corambis
NOVIK, Naomi - In His Majesty's Service
REDICK, Robert V.S. - The Rats and the Ruling Sea (forthcoming: August)
RUCKLEY, Brian - Fall of Thanes
SANDERSON, Brandon - Warbreaker
SCHOLES, Ken - Lamentation

If The Gathering Storm is well received by the Wheel of Time fans, I see it as the front runner.

Scott Lynch's The Republic of Thieves is not coming out in 09, according to Anne Groell, Lynch's US editor. The earliest we could see this book is a year from now.

Give up on getting George RR Martin's next book this year either. Both he and his editor have said that even a March 2010 release is optimistic.

Got them added now, alas I've not been able to include the Felix Gillman title as the HB was originally printed on the 30th December 08.
