Glenda Larke is very much in the spirit of DG! She has written some fine books and I really think The Last Stormlord is her best to date. It has excellent world building and an fine crop of characters.

Imagine a world where water, or lack thereof, dominates every nuance of daily life. A message for our time, but one that's cloaked in a highly original story.

Having read and being a major fan of Frank Herbert, I find similarities to the quintessential eco sci fi series Dune. Since Glenda was born and raised in Australia, an island continent with many of the characteristics of Arrakis, i can see her inspiration for this novel. A fine cause is served by any presentation of the facts of global warming, which i can gather from the synopsis. I, for one, will see that i read this book. I am glad to see noms from the down under part of the Empire!

Depends where you are, Joe. If you're in Oz, it's available right now! Here is it released by HC Voyager: in the UK and probably elsewhere, it will be released by Orbit. You could check out the website in your country to find out, I guess.

The Last Stormlord is already out in Australia and NZ. It is due out in UK and US at the end of this month, which means that it will arrive in odd corners of the world over the following couple of months. A lot depends on whether bookshops order it...

Outstanding link, really enforces my prior perceptions about the Herbert link. Frank Herbert wa sone of the visionaries in the Fantasy field and influenced many of my contemporaries to enter the science and environmental arena in hopes of avoiding just the scenario played out in Glenda s book. My preorder wil be put in tonight at BAM.

HI Glenda,
I am amajor fan of what you re doing. What i would like to know is, did you ever correspond with Herbert or his son? i have not read your book yet, but i think i detect some Herbertian influence? Your premise is different, i know. A planet without any water is not one whose water is locked up in caches, just waiting for retrieval. But the religion based on water-conservancy is in both. The Freman and the Stormlords serve the same function i think- trying to save the little water present in the biosphere. Of course i could be wrong. I will let you know what i think of the tale as soon as i can come across it.

Corresponding? No, never. It must be more than 20 years since I read any of the Dune series...

I guess the moment a writer ventures into a near waterless environment, the comparisons to Dune are inevitable. The situation in the Stormlord books is more local - there are other parts of this planet that have loads of water. The cause of water shortage here in the area known as the Quartern is climate change. This is hinted at, but it's a past event.

Certainly there are parallels to Dune - deserts all tend to have similarities! - but I tried very, very hard not to make it a rip off even though the Quartern has dunes and people who live on them.
