The David Gemmell Legend Awards

Hello everyone, I wondered if anyone could help me out with a bit of advice.
Due to my circumstances I have to sell my David Gemmell collection, most of theses are signed , including a copy of White Knight Black Swan , which David signed for me . I also have a letter from David which he sent to me after I recorded a song "Waylander", as a tribute. I know that collections with provenance would sell better than single titles and it would seem White knight is quite rare now but whom do I approach to find out a value? are there book auctioneers?? Please help to point a poor wordsmith in the right direction. Regards Jack.

Hi Jack

Sorry you have to sell your collection but, lucky you - White Night, Black Swan is indeed pretty valuable! I'm not sure exactly how much, but if I were you I would check somewhere like www.abebooks.com which deals with second-hand books - you can get the addresses of some specialist dealers on there too. Be careful & get a few estimates first. I don't know of any other copies in circulation at the moment. I think we have a couple of Members on here who are book dealers as when we had the 1st Edition Legend last year for the charity auction, we had a few offers from Members...

I would suggest anyone who is interested, should PM Jack via his page (the "Send Me a Message" link on his profile) as we don't want a bidding war on the website!

Good luck Jack!

Well thank you Deborah , I really didn't expect such a prompt reply , it really is a shame that I have to sell but as my old Dad used to say " Needs must when the Devils got your trousers ! " .... And to be honest "Old Nick" has been sporting my Levi's for some time now. I expected to see my daughter on antiques roadshow in about 20 years time with the whole collection Saying " it's worth how much ? " But unfortunately this is the way it goes some time, never mind eh ! Regards. Jack

Dear Jack white knight black swan is very rare. I've never been able to track down an affordable copy myself. For example there is only one copy available on amazon, second hand, £999. I wouldn't leave it go cheaplyl if I was you.

Oh My ! It was probably one of my better ideas to get David to sign it then wasn't it , heh, heh! I'm trying to be cool and relaxed about it but inside the big yellow guy is yelling " WhooHoo! "

Hi Jack,
The whole collection is worth a lot. The older the title the more valuable it is. Being signed also adds value. Trying to get a descent valuation is a difficult thing these days (as I've had to get the odd book in my own collection valued for insurance purposes.) As Deb's has suggested Abe Books can give you a guide price but depending where in the UK you are you might be better contacting a local auction house and asking where to go for a valuation.

Other than that, don't take the first one, get three or four just to give you a guide price. When times are hard theres some unscrupulous people out there which is why I'm suggesting getting a number of valuations. I do sympathise with you. My own collection is worth the world to me so I know how hard it is for you to lose them although luckily I've not had to part with one of them. With luck real fans will obtain these titles and get as much pleasure out of them as you have. I just wish I could afford a few myself as Im missing a lot of the HB's.

`DD, thanks for the tips man, I shall contact a few auctioneers in London , I live in S/E . Your right about hard decision, I sold my 1971 Rover P5B first and that was my baby! This is worse . I remember the day Myself and a few pals went to one of David's booksigning's which was in a pub in London, WhooHoo ! , and I only took White knight along with me as an afterthought , he signed it and we got a signed poster too! As you know he was a very approachable and likeable chap and made time and chatted to us about Jon Shannow and The Outlaw Josie Wales ,The Firehills in Hastings and he even invited us down to see Druss's Axe and a pint in The Pumphouse I only wish I'd taken him up on the offer but you know what it's like ..you never want to impose, of course I'm kicking myself now. I really hope my collection goes to a fan that way I could ease my concience over selling something so personal. Best Regards. Jack

Hi Jack
I'm in the same position as you. I've got a large collection of 1st ed signed Gemmell books including White Knight Black Swan. They were left to me by my late husband who was always at Gemmells book signings, he was a massive fan. I was shocked to see how much some of them are worth and am considering selling them but only to a real fan as they were my husbands pride and joy.
